Abstract:
The varicose disease affects ca. 50% of adults in EU countries. In Romania, the incidence, complications
of the disease and the influence of the environment on it have not been extensively studied. In the present
study, they were investigated in an urban population in Timişoara, Romania. Les Laboratoires Servier organized
2 teams of 15 family doctors who examined each 70 consecutive patients and searched for venous diseases. The
diagnosis was verified by two specialists in phlebology. The prevalence of venous pathology in Timişoara was
compared to that of other Romanian towns. The risk factors for the varicose disease were: heredity, occupation,
sedentary style of life, overweight, smoking, pregnancy, venous thrombosis, and hormonal treatment. In Timişoara,
23% of the patients had occupations with high risk for the varicose disease. The new entity travellers’ thrombosis
was defined as a consequence of the increasing number of long-distance travels. Of the 18 cases of travellers’
thrombosis, 60% ensued after long-lasting travels by bus or car. At our surgical clinic the patients with venous
diseases had the CEAP scores of C4, C5, and C6, 80% of the latter was observed among the patients of low economic level.
